Wayne, IN 5/12/08 --- It took a while but the Komets finally prevailed
3-2 over the visiting Port Huron Icehawks in triple overtime Monday night in
Fort Wayne to capture the seventh and decisive game of the IHL Turner Cup
Finals 4-3. Port Huron had secured a 3-1 series lead before Fort Wayne
battled back to win three straight games and capture the IHL 2008
Championship.
The game marked only the second game seven in the finals for the Komets,
both on Fort Wayne ice. The Komets also had a game seven on
Monday, April 18, 1960 when they lost 3-1 to the Saint Paul Saints.
The Komets are now 6-3 when playing in a game seven in the playoffs.
A sold out crowd of 10,462 witnessed the Komets win their sixth championship
in the rich 56-year history of the Fort Wayne franchise. The Komets
have now won five IHL crowns and one UHL championship.
The game was the third longest in
Fort Wayne's history. IHL Turner Cup playoff MVP Justin Hodgman scored
the game winner 23 seconds into the third overtime to end the game after 100
minutes, 23 seconds. Hodgman, 19, also scored the first goal of the
game at 6:03 of the second period to finish the playoffs leading the Komets
with seven goals and 14 points in 13 post season games. The rookie
center was appearing in his first pro playoffs after being added to the Fort
Wayne roster under amateur status.
Defenseman Guy Dupuis put the Komets ahead by two at 13:57 of the second
period. The Icehawks started their comeback bid 35 seconds later on a
marker by winger Jeff Zehr. With 64 seconds remaining in the third
period Port Huron pulled goaltender Larry Sterling for the extra attacker
and 12 seconds later Icehawk winger Tab Lardner hit the twine to send the
game into overtime.
Komet goalie Nick Boucher picked up his third straight win stopping 34 of 36
shots. Boucher completed the playoffs with a 5-2-1 record and topped
IHL netminders with a 2.09 goals-against average. Sterling made 57
saves on 60 shots and appeared in all 12 of Port Huron's post-season games
ranking third with a 2.51 goals-against average.
